Dealing With Teenshoplifters
Parents often discuss drugs, alcohol and sexual activities with their kids; unfortunately though, not many are discussing shoplifting – something which not only constitutes illegality but can have lasting repercussions for future college admission and employment opportunities.
Teens shoplift for various reasons, ranging from peer pressure and the desire to appear hip to poor impulse control and thrill seeking. Some teens may also feel stressed at home or feel unattractive or unwanted; kleptomania, an addiction characterized by compulsive stealing often begins in late adolescence in some.
Teenagers caught engaging in illegal behavior may face fines, jail time and an arrest record that follows them into adulthood. Though juvenile records are typically kept private, colleges and potential employers can request access to them; an improperly handled case could prevent admission or prevent employment opportunities for the defendant.
One of the primary challenges faced by teens accused of theft is being charged for all stolen items even if only some were actually taken. This makes paying back store owners very difficult, particularly if multiple charges have been levelled against the same teen.
Digital shoplifting poses another significant difficulty: it can desensitize teens to unethical behavior if it goes undetected. Parents can help their children by explaining that committing unethical behavior online without having to face anyone directly may make them less likely to comprehend that theft is always wrong.
