Parents often see Discord as an effective tool for their teens to connect online over games they all enjoy, but its dark side lies within its hidden communities and chat rooms, where adults use it as a recruitment platform before abducting children, trading CSAM material or coercing minors into sending nude photos for payment.

Discord claims it offers a safe environment for kids and teenagers, yet there’s no meaningful age verification and its few protective measures can easily be bypassed. One mother discovered her 16-year-old daughter had struck up a private conversation with someone purporting to be an older man on Discord who then asked her for nude photos to send. According to authorities, the perpetrator then abducted and took her across state lines where he physically assaulted her.

Tiplines run by organizations like C3P have received reports of cases of child exploitation and grooming, such as lure-luring. According to one of their tipline directors, predators would lure young girls into Discord servers that are unregulated, then engage them in private conversations where they would “pimp out” children by exposing their bodies, sharing explicit material or asking them to record themselves using hidden cameras.

Discord has joined forces with nonprofits that advance internet safety to strengthen community standards on its app’s Safety Center, where new account controls enable parents to control what types of content, block offensive users and who can message their kids are restricted or blocked as part of an update plan. Furthermore, an upcoming update will prevent minors from receiving friend requests or private messages from anyone in their server by default.
