Nude Leaks Teens
When girls find that their intimate photos have been released without their permission online, it can cause lasting damage. The invasion of their privacy and violation of personal boundaries may cause mental distress, lower self-esteem issues and lead to trust issues with others – possibly impacting relationships, security or sense of wellbeing altogether. Extreme cases could even trigger posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Teenagers understand the risks of sharing fake nudes are harmful; 41% reported it caused emotional distress or reputational harm. Yet 16% still think the images are fake; this may stem from not understanding it is illegal to create these images – thus leading to some states banning their creation and federal legislation categorizing nonconsensual distribution as sexual harassment that schools must address under Title IX.
But simply telling teens not to create or share such images won’t do. A multifaceted approach must include education, awareness and legislative measures. Promoting digital literacy among teens while creating an environment in which personal boundaries are respected is vital in making more responsible use of phones by teens. Furthermore, penalising those involved with peer-based exchange would send the wrong message that child sexual exploitation material distribution was somehow the responsibility of these adolescents.
