Teens Grand Slammed at US Open
On Saturday at the US Open women’s final, Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu will become the first teenagers ever to compete on one of sport’s premier stages since its start – but they won’t be alone amongst teens making headlines at this tournament!
Teen phenoms have thrilled fans and veteran players like 28-year-old Shelby Rogers from the United States have taken notice. She expressed hope that younger players, such as Fernandez and Raducanu, continue pushing the limits of tennis.
These players understandably desire to push boundaries, not only by winning grand slam titles but also through showing young players how they can win; this means being great sportspeople both on and off the court.
At this year’s Australian Open, 16-year-old Slovakian Renata Jamrichova made the extra effort to show her gratitude after winning her junior girls’ final against 15-year-old Australian Emerson Jones and offering them both handshakes before offering a hug after concluding their handshakes.
Jamrichova’s act has garnered her widespread acclaim as an act of sporting kindness. Her gesture follows others by teenage tennis players to reinforce the importance of fair play and respecting opponents and officials within the sport.
