The Fm-Teens – How Are They Listening to Music?

Fm-Teens are children who listen to AM/FM Radio at home and in the car, as well as streaming music services on smartphones – and these habits may influence how their parents consume music as well. With smartphones being part of their lives from early on, it should come as no surprise that these teenagers hold strong opinions regarding both music and technology.

Most readers of this will likely have teenaged and possibly younger children living in your household, as almost one-third of all 25-54 year-olds and almost as many older adults in the “money demo.” How are your teenagers listening to music today?

Many of you likely know that Fm-Teens often own iPods and stream their favorite tunes through Spotify, Apple Music or another service like Pandora; but you might not know that some Fm-Teens use AM/FM radio as their main source for discovering new tunes; in fact, according to Edison Research/Triton Digital Infinite Dial survey 29% of teens identified FM radio as their primary source for new music!

Fm-Teens present another significant challenge to radio industry is convincing their parents to try new technologies and streaming services, according to Edison Research’s presentation on Fm-Teens living in their household. According to this presentation, parents with teens living at home are 20% more likely than those without any children to report streaming in the last 24 hours.
