Lateenie – A Type of Sail Mounted on a Yard That Pivots at the Point of Attachment to the Mast

Lateenie

Lateenie sails, mounted with yards that pivot at their attachment points to masts, were originally popular among small craft such as gundalows (barge-like vessels favored for river travel in Northeast) and balancelle sailing vessels of Baltic seafaring trade; later it gradually gave way to carrack and square sails in European ships operating high seas trade; they may also sometimes be confused with tanja sails.
