In an environment that valorizes body flaunting, sexting is often an easy and unremarkable practice among teenagers. Unfortunately, getting caught can be more of an inconvenience; once caught, teenagers face double standards: while boys caught sexting may be celebrated as fools or boastful studs; female teens caught engaging in this behavior may be seen as deviants or even accused of sexual misconduct.
Sometimes the only recourse available to schools is schoolwide shaming reminiscent of Puritan New England’s tarring and feathering practices, such as Sales’ account from Boca Raton. Here, nude pictures sent between boys are quickly disseminated to other students within their schools until everyone knows about the girl’s indiscretions.
Sales is especially worried about slut-shaming, but she also highlights the rise in sexy retweets – memes in which girls post nude pictures of themselves to Tumblr to shame other girls – such as “sink shot.” Last summer was particularly notable for this phenomenon, which involves women taking selfies in front of bathroom mirrors with their behinds propped against sinks to make photos appear larger.
Images posted and tweeted with the intent of making girls less desirable (see here) are often shared without consent and posted again and again, often by male users on social media (see here). Qualitative studies reveal that teenage evaluations of sexually suggestive photos differ depending on whether or not they belong to either gender, increasing girls’ risk for nonconsensual dissemination compared to boys.
