Teenage Nylon
Nylon Magazine first made waves as a print magazine targeting young women with its “naughty but nice” vibe back in 1999, but its online version still maintains this vibe today. Nylon Shop embodies this persona by selling designer labels (including Brooklyn label Samantha Pleet and U.K. label Lavish Alice) alongside graphic tees bearing slogans such as: ‘Death Before Decaf Less Whine More Wine’ as best sellers; Katherine Martinez, director of e-commerce at Nylon says their best-selling items are tagline T-shirts which reference internet culture: “They’re memes basically.” According to Katherine Martinez:
Wallace Carothers made history when he created polyamide for commercial applications in 1934, though there was no immediate market application due to a low melting temperature which prevented fiber production; hence Carothers pursued other research topics instead.
DuPont began construction of its Seaford, Delaware factory to manufacture 12 million pounds of nylon annually in 1938 – it was an enormous gamble which proved highly successful – Joseph Labovsky who invented nylon later noted how rapidly production took off! “It was almost unnerving how fast things took off!,” Labovsky commented later.
By the mid-1980s, Nylon had established itself as an industry leader. Alongside nylon products, the company produced underwear including panties as well as social media apps and content (blogs, podcasts and a TV channel).
